Late spring brings heavy rain to northeast Wyoming and this time of year can present challenges to companies like Sundance-based K&K Concrete.

For co-owner Kris Doornink, who operates K&K with his wife, Kara, soggy ground created by incessant rainfall can put a hold on his ability to pour concrete and complete projects.

And for a small business owner in particular, time is money.

However, when it comes to maintaining an uncompromising degree of craftsmanship, absorbing weather-induced delays is a no-brainer.

“We’re about doing the best we can to ensure projects are done on time, but not sacrificing quality,” he said. “We try to keep integrity at the front of our minds. This time of year especially plays a big role, because a lot of times, we can pour. But should we pour due to a sub-grade? Probably not. Especially right after a rainstorm, everything gets squishy. We could pour on top of it, make it look good and do our job, but as far as longevity of the project, it probably isn’t going to last. That’s where we try to maintain our line of integrity.”

Credibility is K&K’s Currency

K&K Concrete lives by its reputation, which the Doorninks have worked hard to curate over a decade in business.

Those efforts have paid off.

While K&K does engage in some advertising to increase their visibility, the lion’s share of jobs they take on are gained by word-of-mouth.

By leaving a trail of consistent customer satisfaction, Kris has found that his clients are inclined to spread the word about K&K to their friends and family.

New customers are thus borne out of the relationships forged with those for whom he’s worked in the past.

“A lot of our projects are won just by, ‘This guy said to call you,’” he said. “That’s what I hear all the time. Past customers are what gets us our future projects. They know we went in and did a good job for all these people they’re good friends with, so they feel like they can trust us.

“I love it. We just keep growing bigger and bigger and stretching over a bigger area because word-of-mouth keeps spreading,” he said.

No Signs of Slowing Down

K&K Concrete does not discriminate when undertaking big or small projects.

Last year, they completed a 25,000-square-foot pour featuring 600 cubic yards of concrete in Rapid City, SD, while recently, a smaller project was a 24x35-foot driveway.

As K&K continues to grow, Doornink is excited for what the future holds.

“I know a lot of areas of the country and have talked to quite a few people. They’re not in a recession, per se, but kind of slow,” Doornink said. “We have an awesome year ahead of us.”

In Good Hands with PRECorp

Access to reliable energy is critical for companies such as K&K Concrete.

Having partnered with PRECorp for over a decade, Doornink hasn’t been let down yet.

“They’ve always been super good to work with,” Kris said. “They’re ahead of the curve, like you would think of in a big city as far as how they handle outages and everything, when you call – all that kind of stuff. They’ve been outstanding.”
