Broken Arrow Farm is a family-owned and operated business established in 2014 in Newcastle, Wyoming, in the state’s northeast corner. Owners Paul and Bailey Eitel, and their three young sons, raise a variety of products, including pastured poultry, egg-laying hens, meat rabbits, beef cows, and emus, and maintain a large garden. The farm emphasizes high-quality products, processing most animals on-site and preserving garden produce.

“We believe in locally and naturally raised quality products,” said Paul. “We take great pride in raising happy, healthy and quality animals.”

Farm for the community

Eitel initially moved to Weston County in 2014 for a job with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, later meeting Weston County native Bailey. The concept of starting a farm arose for them as they noticed a lack of locally-sourced and available products, such as meat chickens. They established the farm after learning of the current property’s availability from a friend.

They started small, initially testing product demand and scaling up based on customer interest. They also take pre-orders for meat chickens to gauge production needs. Today, Broken Arrow Farm's market spans from Weston County throughout Wyoming and extends to Western South Dakota and Nebraska.

“Many of the products we provide have not been available in this area historically,” said Paul. “When we started, there was beef, sheep, and pork available locally to buy, but there wasn’t anyone raising and selling pasture-raised meat chickens. Today, we raise, process and sell around 500 to 600 chicken fryers every year.”

Unique to northeast Wyoming

Weston County is a hub for livestock operations, including cattle, sheep, and horses. The 2017 USDA Census of Agriculture indicated the county had 247 agricultural operations and over 1.2 million acres of farmland, with 94% classified as pastureland. The Eitels want to offer diverse products not typically found in the area because they understand Weston County is a supportive community with people who value small businesses.

“The poultry and cows have access to fresh green forage and wide-open Wyoming skies during the spring and summer,” said Bailey. “Our animals are fed a diet free of hormones and raised in a low-stress environment, which makes for great-tasting meat that is healthy and delicious - the way nature intended it to be!”

The farm's uniqueness is highlighted by its YouTube channel, Broken Arrow Farm 307, which the Eitels use to help anyone interested in their lifestyle succeed on a small farm, ranch, or homestead.

Dedication to community

The Eitels are proud to play a role in the economic landscape of Newcastle and Weston County. During the summer months, the farm hires part-time high school help. They also collaborate with other local meat producers and work with a Newcastle business to make their products more accessible.

The Eitels encourage people to follow Broken Arrow Farm on their websiteFacebook and YouTube channel to stay updated on their available products and farm activities.
