The county seat of Campbell County, Gillette is a city of about 30,000, and coal and cattle have been major features of its history. Founded in the late 1800s, the town came to life when the railroad came through, and soon the rail cars were shipping coal. Today, in addition to coal mining, Gillette’s diverse economy includes related energy industries, as well as a broad portfolio of manufacturing, education, healthcare, and service sector businesses.
Gillette is home to a highly rated two-year college, top-ranked public schools, and a host of activities, both indoors and out. The 9,000-seat Cam-Plex features events from rodeos to Broadway musicals, while hunting, hiking, and other outdoor fun can be found at nearby Black Hills, South Dakota and the Bighorn Mountains.
