Sundance, Wy: More than a Western Tourism Hub!

Named for the Sun Dance ceremony practiced on or near Sundance Mountain by Native American Indian tribes, Sundance is the county seat of Crook County and offers a base camp for visiting many unforgettable regional attractions, including Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills.

HISTORY

Sundance is much more than the reference from the popular movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)! Established in 1875 as a trading post, Sundance has flourished as a hub for Western tourism. Sundance Square Park is a great place to catch a concert or sit, talk and relax while the kids play in the splash pad. The newly remodeled 1923 Old Stoney High School houses the Crook County Museum & Cultural Center, an excellent location for digging into the wonderful history of Sundance where Native American cultures and Old West accoutrements are artfully displayed.

TOURISM

A number of wonderful natural and historical sites are within easy driving distance from Sundance, including the Sundance White Ranch Park, Vore Buffalo Jump, Devils Tower, Inyan Kara and Keyhole State Park. Visit the Sundance Chamber of Commerce for more information. Running low on battery power? No problem, Sundance recently installed a FREE electric vehicle (EV) charging station on the corner of East Main and North 3rd Streets, courtesy of Powder River Energy Corporation.
